An appeal is underway to overturn a previous Court of Appeal ruling that prevented pleural plaque sufferers from claiming compensation.
The appeal, brought by the trade union Amicus, will argue that pleural plaques are a debilitating condition that increases the risk of developing other asbestos related conditions such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
Although pleural plaques are not fatal they do result in decreased lung capacity and can be seen as proof of asbestos exposure.
Should this latest case succeed it could cost insurers millions of pounds in compensation.
