Asbestos kills 100 teachers

Published on Mon 3 Apr 2006

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is reissuing guidelines to teachers after research by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) revealed more than a hundred teachers had died from exposure to asbestos in the past twenty years.

The findings were splashed across the front pages of the national press on Sunday. Kevin Walkin, the HSE's head of asbestos policy commented:

"Pinning work to walls or ceilings containing asbestos may release asbestos fibres. Although the potential exposure is low, such activities are avoidable and must stop.

"We're not saying teachers can't use drawing pins, but they need to be sure that they do not pin work to asbestos containing materials."
