The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has stepped up its asbestos awareness campaign. So far it has four hundred signatures for its register of teachers who believe they have been exposed to asbestos while at work. The ATL is also handing out a special DVD, 'Mesothelioma: The human face of an asbestos epidemic' to its health and safety reps. ATL safety adviser Doru Athinodoru said 'The reps will then be required to find out about their employers' asbestos policy and if asbestos is present in their workplace.'
According to the Health and Safety Executive, 147 school workers died from mesothelioma between 1991 and 2000.
