Display Energy Certificates
Unlike Energy Performance Certificates (EPC), Display Energy Certificates (DECs) show the actual energy usage of a building known as the Operational Rating. They are designed to help the public see the energy efficiency of a building based on the energy consumption as compared to a nationally acceptable figure. Clearly, a heated swimming baths will use more enrgy than a library so a means of comparison are important.
Display Energy Certificates (DEC) are only required for buildings with a total useful floor area over 1,000m2 that are occupied by a public authority or institutions providing a public service. It is likely that over time the scope of properties requring DEC's will change to include many buildings along the typical high street.
Unlike a EPC, a DEC is valid for one year. Both EPC and DEC are accompanied by an Advisory Report detailing potential means of energy reduction and this report is valid for seven years.
The requirement for Display Energy Certificates (DEC) came into effect from 1 October 2008.
