Changes to asbestos guidelines explained by Thames Laboratories expert

Published on Wed 5 Sep 2007

Thames Laboratories technical director, John Richards, has produced a summary of the proposed changes to the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002 for Workplace Law Magazine. The changes will be of interest to all employers as well as facilities managers, health and safety managers and property owners.

The article covers the major areas of the new asbestos regulations including the potential impact of the new code of practice on staff training, the revised relationship between asbestos control legislation and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH), and the risk re-assessment of certain types of asbestos-containing materials.

John Richards also addresses the controversial Health and Safety Executive (HSE) study that may lead to the use of some types of asbestos being de-regulated. This will bring UK practice into line with that of the EU as well as streamlining the national policy on asbestos management.

Thames Laboratories is one of the UK's leading asbestos consultancies and has been providing a full range of surveying, management, and testing services since 1991.

John Richards has more than 20 years' professional experience in asbestos management, and is an internationally recognised figure in the asbestos abatement sector. John is also the specialist asbestos advisor to the Workplace Law Network on asbestos issues, where he sits on the online advice panel and speaks at the annual Facilities Management Legal Update conference.
